Advertising Standards Authority gets online power

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) is extending its remit to cover the online realm. It means that online marketing and ads will, from 1 March 2011, be subject to the same strict advertising rules as traditional media. The ASA will also have the power to ban marketing statements on social networks such as Facebook and Twitter.

Orange launches HD phone calls

High definition phone calls have been launched nationwide today by mobile operator Orange. Building on a trial announced in June, the technology more than doubles the frequency range available for voice calls, although Orange says that there will be no impact on the mobile network’s performance.

Sony to challenge Apple with video service: report

Sony Corp will launch a new music and video download service linking a range of its devices, in a challenge to Apple Inc's dominant position in the market. The announcement is set to be made at the IFA technology show in Berlin on Wednesday, the paper said, coinciding with a scheduled media event by Apple the same day in the United States.

Fossil of stocky new predatory dinosaur unearthed in Romania

The fossil of a stocky new dinosaur with two sets of claws on its feet unearthed in Romania has given researchers a window into what European predators looked like in the final years of the Age of Dinosaurs. "We've all been waiting for something like this," said study author Mark Norell, chair of the Division of Paleontology at the American Museum of Natural History, "Balaur bondoc is heavy, with unexpectedly stocky limbs and fused bones. It shows just how unusual the fauna of the area was during the waning years of the dinosaur era."
