Seven million ‘use illegal files’

Around seven million people in the UK are involved in illegal downloads, costing the economy tens of billions of pounds, government advisors say. Researchers found 1.3m people using one file-sharing network on one weekday and estimated that over a year they had free access to material worth £120bn. Internet service providers say it is not their job to police the web. A recent report said the new generation of broadband access at 50Mbps could deliver 200 MP3 files in five minutes, a DVD in three and the complete digitised works of Charles Dickens in less than 10.

Microsoft Bing: Much better than expected

Microsoft on Thursday took the wraps off Bing, the rebranded and rebuilt search engine formerly code-named Kumo, designed to replace Live Search. It’s a solid improvement over the previous search product, and it beats Google in important areas. It will help Microsoft gain share in the search business. It’s surprisingly competitive with Google. Bing isn’t available to the public yet, but you won’t have to wait long. Starting on June 1, some users will get Bing search results from Live Search.

Google Unveils a Conversation Service

Google Inc. previewed a new communications service that combines features of email, instant-messaging and document-sharing to facilitate multiperson conversations online. The Google Wave service caps a years-long project to come up with a way to break down the barriers between different types of online communication services, said Lars Rasmussen, the Google engineer who led the development of the service along with his brother, Jens Rasmussen.

Sony Ericsson introduces Christmas line-up

Sony Ericsson introduced a new phone on Thursday that allows consumers to connect to their PlayStation3 gaming consoles, part of its Christmas line-up and its strongest sign yet of integration with parent Sony Corp. The Aino phone will allow users to manage media stored on their PlayStation3, much like the PSP mobile console and helping position the video-gaming console as a media hub, but will not allow them to play games or access high-definition video. Sony Ericsson has rapidly lost market share in recent quarters as demand for so-called feature phones has suffered during the recession.

Hewlett-Packard pulls plug on Scottish factory

Hundreds of jobs are to be axed after it was confirmed today that Hewlett-Packard is to cease manufacturing at a computer plant in Scotland. The work is to be transferred abroad from the factory in Erskine, Renfrewshire. As many as 850 jobs are feared to be at risk out of the 1,300-strong workforce employed by the US-based firm at Erskine. Production would be moved to a “lower cost, outsourced site” in the Czech Republic, according to first minister, Alex Salmond.
